1783
The Martinelli family settled in the Carpi area, Modena province and more precisely in Cortile, a small village, in 1783, where they engaged in farming and viticulture.
At that time, they only had the land adjacent to the main house available, and the winemaking was done in small quantities in the family cellar, with everything taking place within the farm.
1900
At the beginning of the 20th century, the first Cooperative Wineries were born in the Carpi area, and despite this, the Martinelli family continued their own winemaking activities and began to participate in various EXPO fairs, which were innovative for that time.
In the following decades in Carpi, near the State Railways, a proper winery was founded. At its peak, it processed 35,000 quintals of grapes into Lambrusco di Santa Croce and Lambrusco di Sorbara wines.
The wines produced, in addition to the local Modena market, were exported abroad thanks to the presence of a private railway siding in the winery, which greatly facilitated the shipping of the produced wine.
Unfortunately, following the death of the winery's founder around the 1960s, winemaking activities ceased, and the entire grape production was delivered to the local Cooperative Wineries.
The Martinelli family never stopped cultivating and believing in the land, and in the post-war period, they also dedicated themselves to the cultivation of cereals and cattle breeding, but the main activity remained the cultivation of vineyards, especially the Salamino di Santa Croce, Sorbara, and Ancellotta grape varieties.
2000
After decades of cultivating the fields with old and obsolete equipment, it was decided to modernize the farm by purchasing new equipment and machinery for the cultivation and mechanical harvesting of grapes to be delivered to the Cooperative Wineries.
The entire farm area was then reconverted to vineyards: 43 hectares of Lambrusco di Sorbara DOC, Lambrusco di Santa Croce DOC, and a new variety of Grechetto Gentile (Pignoletto), Bianco dell'Emilia IGT.
In the following years, Traminer Aromatico was also planted, convinced that it could grow well in our soils, yielding results beyond our expectations.
The vineyards are managed and cared for in respect of tradition, with modern methods and advanced processing techniques, aiming to achieve high standards of quality and sustainability, thus obtaining excellent results.
2022
The management and care of the vineyards have been passed down from generation to generation, leading to the opening of Cantina Martinelli in August 2022.
This was made possible through the restoration of a family property that was damaged in the 2012 earthquake and completely rebuilt in 2018 with the goal to complete the works by 2024.
The new Cantina Martinelli celebrated its first harvest in 2022, bottling Lambrusco di Santa Croce DOC, Lambrusco di Sorbara DOC, Grechetto Gentile (Pignoletto) Bianco dell'Emilia IGT in both still and sparkling varieties, as well as the traditional method.
Finally, they produced a still and sparkling "Traminer Aromatico"; the latter is the first of its kind in the Carpi area, a wine in which they have great belief, interesting for its persistent aromas and aromatic complexity.
